Elasticity is the property people notice long before they notice wrinkles. It is what makes young skin spring back when you pinch it, and its loss is why skin starts to look tired rather than lined.

It is also, unlike a lot of skincare language, something that can be measured directly.

What elasticity actually depends on

Skin elasticity depends largely on elastin and on the quantity and organisation of collagen in the dermis.

Elastin does what its name suggests. It allows tissue to deform and return. Collagen provides structure and tensile strength. Elasticity is not simply how much collagen you have, but how well it is arranged.

That word organisation matters. Ageing skin does not only lose collagen, it loses the orderly arrangement of what remains. Two people with similar collagen quantity can have very different skin quality depending on how that collagen is structured.

Why elasticity declines

Both elastin and collagen decline with age and with cumulative ultraviolet exposure.

Those two causes are not equal. Chronological ageing is steady and unavoidable. Ultraviolet damage is cumulative, avoidable, and responsible for the majority of visible change. UV directly damages elastin fibres and triggers enzymes that break collagen down faster than it is replaced.

The easiest way to see this is to compare the skin on your face or forearms with the skin on your upper inner arm, which is the same age but has spent its life covered. The difference is photoageing.

What the research measured

Controlled trials of LED red and near-infrared light in photoaged skin have measured improvements in elasticity using instruments such as cutometry, alongside reduced wrinkle depth, typically after 8 to 12 weeks of regular sessions.

Cutometry is worth understanding, because it is what separates this from marketing. The instrument applies gentle suction to a small area of skin, measures how far it deforms and how quickly it returns, and produces a number. It does not care what anyone hoped would happen.

The proposed mechanism is increased fibroblast activity and new collagen synthesis. More active fibroblasts producing more collagen means better structural support, which shows up as better recoil.

What to realistically expect

Changes are gradual and maintained only with continued use.

Both halves matter. Gradual means the timescale is months, matching the 8 to 12 weeks used in trials and usually longer in real life. And maintained only with continued use means this is ongoing rather than a completed course.

Realistically: skin that feels firmer, looks a little more resilient, and holds its shape better around the jaw and under the eyes. Not a facelift, and nobody should sell it as one.

The point that outweighs everything else

Sun protection remains the single most effective way to preserve elasticity, and no light therapy compensates for ongoing unprotected exposure.

If you use a red light panel four times a week and then spend summer weekends unprotected, you are working against yourself and losing. UV damages elastin faster than any therapy rebuilds it.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the highest-return thing you can do for skin elasticity, and it costs a fraction of any device. We would rather say so than let you spend money on the wrong priority.

Practical guidance

  • Clean, bare skin. Sunscreen and makeup block light. Cleanse first, reapply skincare afterwards
  • 10 to 20 minutes, three to five times a week
  • Red and near-infrared together. Red for the upper layers, near-infrared for the deeper dermis where collagen is organised
  • Consistent distance for a consistent dose
  • Photograph monthly in the same light and position
  • Judge at three months, not three weeks
