Bryan Johnson has made himself the most documented human experiment in longevity. He publishes his protocol openly, which is unusual, and it means anyone can look at what he does rather than guess.
Light therapy is part of it. That is why people search for it. The more useful question is not whether a wealthy entrepreneur uses red light, but whether the light part of a very expensive protocol is one of the bits ordinary people should bother with.
Short answer: partly. And the part most people copy is not the part with the strongest evidence.
Two completely different things called light therapy
This is where almost everyone gets confused, and it is the single most useful thing in this article.
Bright light for circadian timing. A very bright, broad-spectrum lamp used shortly after waking. The purpose is to anchor your body clock, which governs sleep quality, alertness and hormone release. This has nothing to do with red light or mitochondria.
Red and near-infrared light for photobiomodulation. Specific wavelengths, roughly 630 to 850 nm, absorbed by mitochondria to increase available cellular energy. Targets skin, muscle and other tissue. Nothing to do with your body clock.
Different mechanisms, different equipment, different reasons. People buy a red light panel expecting better sleep, which is a bit like buying running shoes to improve your handwriting.
Which part has the stronger evidence
Honestly, the boring one.
Morning light exposure is among the most robust findings in sleep science. Bright light early in the day advances your circadian clock, and consistent morning light is one of the few interventions nearly every sleep researcher agrees on. It is also free if you go outside.
Red and near-infrared photobiomodulation has good evidence in specific areas, particularly skin and muscle recovery, and thinner evidence in many others. Real, but narrower than the marketing suggests.
So if you were copying one thing from the protocol and only one, it would be the free one: get outside within an hour of waking.
What is worth copying
- Morning light, daily. Outdoors beats any lamp. Costs nothing.
- Consistency over intensity. The reason his protocol produces measurable results is that he does it every day for years, not that any single component is special.
- Measuring something. He tracks outcomes. Most people do not, then wonder whether anything is working. Even a monthly photo in the same light is better than nothing.
- Sensible session lengths. Photobiomodulation has a biphasic dose response. Too little does nothing, too much reverses the benefit. Longer is not better.
What is not worth copying
- The scale of it. A protocol built around continuous medical supervision and a very large budget is not a template for a normal life.
- Stacking everything at once. If you change fifteen variables simultaneously you learn nothing about which one helped.
- Assuming his results transfer. A protocol optimised for one person, with one genome and one starting point, is a case study of one.
- Buying on wavelength count. A controlled trial comparing a broad 570 to 850 nm spectrum against red alone found no advantage for the broader one. More colours on a spec sheet is a marketing feature.
The useful lesson underneath
The interesting thing about publishing your protocol is not the protocol. It is that publishing it invites scrutiny, and scrutiny is what separates a method from a claim.
Applied to light therapy, that means asking for specifics before you buy anything: which wavelengths, what irradiance at what distance, and what evidence exists for the use you care about. A company that cannot answer those is selling you a warm glow.
